Health of the York River & Small Coastal Basins

York River Watershed

The York Watershed is comprised of 2669 square miles or 1.7 million acres and encompasses 20 counties and cities. (www.cbf.org). Threats to the upper York’s water quality include conversion of waterfront farmland into residential and commercial uses as well as potential water withdrawal plans including a reservoir on the Mattaponi (a tributary to the York). The lower York is threatened mainly by point source pollution from industry and federal facilities.
